The History of Perranporth
The NameThe name Perranporth is Cornish for 'Saint Piran's cove'. Saint Piran is the patron saint of Cornwall and his symbol of the white-on-black cross features on the county's flag. The Lost ChurchIt is believed that Saint Piran founded the church near to Perranporth, known locally as The Lost Church as after being built in the seventh century, it became buried under sand for many centuries there after. It was uncovered again in the early 20th Century, but became hidden once more in the 1970s. Winston GrahamThe author Winston Graham lived in Perranporth and his famous Poldark novels are based on the history of the area and its local families. In the novel he talks of 'Hendrawna Sands' which is believed to be Perranporth beach. Perranporth TodayToday, Perranporth is a popular bucket-and-spade, family holiday, seaside resort with a multitude of local attractions and stunning scenery. Over recent years, the village has become popular with surfers along with many neighbouring areas of Cornwall, with tourism being it's primary industry. |
